"Divorce Rates Higher in States with Gay Marriage Bans"

via FiveThirtyEight and Feministing.

See the statistics chart for yourself!

Seriously, as if it couldn't get any more obvious that bans on gay marriage are only a result of bigotry and are in no way connected to the so-called "sanctity" of marriage. Are you getting this, guys? You're going to have to come up with a better excuse than that. Or maybe you could try getting over yourself for fucking once and stop trying to interfere in everyone else's lives.

Why don't I write more about gay rights, you ask? Well-- because I feel that it's such a cut-and-dry issue. There's really nothing to debate because it's not a philosophical issue. This is an obvious issue of human happiness. The other side's arguments are so transparently hateful and based on stupid sectarian beliefs that they are easily dismissed with hearty laughter. (The subject of abortion, on the other hand, is fraught with philosophical debates about bodily autonomy and the notion of personhood, and is further complicated by the hyper-emotional hysterics that make up the Religious Right in this country.)

Of course, that is not to say that the gay community doesn't have any more work to do. That is not to say that I - as a straight ally - don't have anything to rant about or fight for. There's a shit ton of stuff to be addressed. And the gay community still has their work cut out for them, and a long way to go in the battle for equal rights, as long as the Religious Right exists in this country.

Personally, I differ in my opinion on how gay marriage should be legalized. I think a state-by-state win is extremely tedious and tenuous (just look at how easily Prop H8 took that away). What the gay community (and straight allies) need to do is address it on a federal level, not at the state level. They've already started by taking the case against Prop H8 to a federal court (And I'll be watching for the outcome and summary of that case; expect a blog entry in the future for that). After this case, they really need to make another federal case to show that other bans similar to Prop H8 are unconstituional, thereby automatically making gay marriage legal throught the entire country.

In the meantime, I'll be doing my part to fight for the rights of gay individuals and calling the homophobes out on their bullshit.
