Welcome to
La Plume Assassine.
The name was suggested by one of my awesome professors.
The name means The Killer Quill in case you didn't figure that out yet by looking at the URL.
In any case, I'm Emily and I'm angry about a lot of things. :)
I enjoy writing (ranting) about feminist issues, reproductive justice, religion, gay rights, racial justice, media, science, ethics, and first amendment rights.
RULES, INFO, AND JUNK:
READING IS FUN: I write about reproductive rights a lot-- specifically abortion and contraception. If you're here to debate with me because I'm pro-choice, then congratulations: you have some required reading to do! See HERE and HERE. Believe me, I have read a ton of junk from the anti-choice brigade, so the least you could do is take some time to read these pages! I'll be able to tell if you've read anything or not. If I think you've commented without doing your homework, then I will ignore your post by simply responding with those links (and the specific section that you need to read.) If you have time, you also might like to check out my questions for pro-lifers or any of the essays & links on the left side bar. Remember: This is for your protection so you don't embarrass yourself by repeating debunked myths and misinformation!
GOD SAYS: Let it be known that all posts arguing from religious authority (ex. "God says..." or "The Bible says..." etc) will be also be ignored and dismissed with hearty laughter. Try taking a debate, logic, philosophy, ethics, or world religions class before spewing that BS. Read more about this common fallacy
NO PROSELYTIZING OR EVANGELIZING: Any religious nutjobs trying to sell me their brand of Christianity (or appealing to my "intellect" by "challenging" me to read the Bible ROFL) will be ignored, mocked, or have their names used in charitable donations to secular social justice organizations.
COMMENTS: Any homophobic, racist, or blatantly sexist statements in comments will result in $5-$10 donated IN THE NAME OF THE COMMENTER (or the name of their blog) to a left-wing social justice organization of my choice. This also applies to other comments that piss me off (or commenters that come here without reading the rules).
ABOUT THE TITLE: My blog is called Killer Quill/La Plume Assassine in reference to that old adage: "the pen is mightier than the sword." This is a literary reference, guys! Some people, unfortunately, are a bit too literal-minded and seem to think that this implies that I have violent tendencies. On the contrary, I am anti-violence, anti-war, anti-harrassment, etc; and as a peaceful person I do not believe in inciting violence in any way. Furthermore, I see the title of "La Plume Assassine" as an abstract way of "killing" ideas and small-minded beliefs with (attempts at) biting wit & logic. I only "attack" people with words.
TIPS:
- My writing style is long-winded, verbose, and littered with unnecessary foul language. (What this means is that I'm not actually a good writer ;) I have tried to tone it down a little, but sometimes it can't be helped. And sometimes colorful language adds a lot of humor!
- I WILL come off as angry and bitter and horrible. That's because this is my place to vent. It's cathartic. If you can't handle it, then this is not the place for you. In person, I am actually quite pleasant and diplomatic.
- I don't delete any of my blog entries, but I will keep them saved as drafts (private) if they generate too much trollin' and drama. Anyone can request that I make them public again for review. I also do not delete any comments, even if I disagree with them (unless they contain highly personal information.)
- I do not comment on blogs of people who engage in dramawhore bitchfests about me. I am not interested in elevating conflict. I think that's petty and childish and a waste of my time. If you have something to say to me, say it here. I may or may not bother responding to you.
Thank you, and please remember to leave your thoughts
My name is Gina, I think we've met before. I am a former president of Clarion's SFL. While I disagreed with nearly everything you had to say, I like your style. You are clearly intelligent, and your blog is well-written, and even well-intentioned. I feel a bit like your pro-life mirror-image. I get very fired up about this topic as well, and I don’t know about you, but it is sometimes frustrating for me to feel like I have no outlet for my thoughts other than to shout into the dark at some absent “they” I build up in my mind (or vent to friends who agree with me already). After all I’ve read from you, I have no idea where to begin a rebuttal—the topic is so broad. I thought I would extend the invitation to you to start off with something you would like to discuss. I won’t give you religious arguments, unless you bring up religion. I know this is a bit weird, but your blog affected me to the point that I had to say something, but like I said, I don’t know where to start and it would take hours to respond to you point by point. So, if you’re interested, I’m a pro-life person who is offering you the opportunity to rant directly at me.
ReplyDeleteHi, Gina. I'm sure we probably met at some point, but I have a terrible memory for names and faces. I do know that I've heard a bit about your involvement with SFL.
ReplyDeleteI apologize for taking so long to respond to your comment, but I don't have e-mail notifications set up for this blog (yet).
Anyway, thanks for reading and taking the time to leave your thoughts. I'm always up for a good debate or a discussion, and I always welcome a well-written rant.
Since you wanted me to start, then I am personally interested in reading your responses to these questions
